Abstract This study evaluated the influence of a fluoride-modified titanium surface on osseointegration in rats with induced diabetes. One hundred and eighty rats were randomly allocated into 3 groups with 60 animals each: Control group (C): Animals without diabetes; Diabetes Group (D): Animals with uncontrolled induced diabetes; Controlled Diabetes Group (CD): Animals with diabetes induced controlled by the insulin administration. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection. Each animal received 2 implants in the proximal tibial metaphysis, one with the machined surface (M) and the other one with a fluoride-modified titanium surface (F), after 4 weeks of induction of diabetes. The animals were submitted to euthanasia 2, 4, and 6 weeks after the implant placement (n = 20 animals/group). The osseointegration was evaluated by the implant removal torque test and the histometric analysis of the non-decalcified histological sections: 1) Contact bone/implant (%BIC); 2) Bone tissue area between implant threads (%BBT). Implants with F surface showed a higher removal torque than implants with surface M in all groups. There was no difference in %BIC between the groups regardless of the surface used. The F surface showed a tendency to present higher %BBT values for the 3 evaluation periods in the D group. The fluoride-modified implant surface has no impact on the %BIC and %BBT. However, the fluoride-modified implant surface increases the locking of the implants with the bone. The hyperglycemia was associated with lower removal torque values despite the surfaces of the implant used.

Resumo Este estudo avaliou a influência de uma superfície de titânio modificada com flúor na osseointegração em ratos com diabetes induzida. Cento e oitenta ratos foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em 3 grupos com 60 animais cada: Grupo controle (C): Animais sem diabetes; Grupo Diabetes (D): Animais com diabetes induzida descompensada; Grupo Diabetes Controlado (CD): Animais com diabetes induzido controlado pela administração de insulina. O diabetes foi induzido por injeção de estreptozotocina. Cada animal recebeu 2 implantes na metáfise proximal da tíbia, um com superfície usinada (M) e outro com superfície de titânio modificado com flúor (F), após 4 semanas de indução do diabetes. Os animais foram submetidos à eutanásia 2, 4 e 6 semanas após a colocação do implante (n = 20 animais/grupo). A osseointegração foi avaliada pelo teste de torque de remoção do implante e pela análise histométrica dos cortes histológicos não descalcificados: 1) Contato osso-implante (%BIC); 2) Área de tecido ósseo entre as roscas do implante (%BBT). Os implantes com superfície F apresentaram maior torque de remoção do que os implantes com superfície M em todos os grupos. Não houve diferença no %BIC entre os grupos independente da superfície utilizada. A superfície F mostrou tendência a apresentar maiores valores de %BBT para os 3 períodos de avaliação no grupo D. As superfícies de implantes modificadas com flúor não influenciaram nos dados de %BIC e %BBT. Entretanto, essas superfícies aumentaram o travamento dos implantes no tecido ósseo. A hiperglicemia foi associada a menores torques de remoção dos implantes independentemente do tipo de superfície de implante utilizada.

Aim this review aims to present the mechanisms of protein interactions with titanium dental implant surfaces. Methods the analyses were based on searches of scientific articles available in English and Portuguese in PubMed (MEDLINE), Bireme (LILACS), Scielo, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Results titanium dental implant treatments success rates (95-98%) are mainly due to the biocompatibility of titanium oxide on the implant surface, surgical techniques adopted, good implants manufacturing processes and biomechanical knowledge of the systems. Studies in past decades has empirically developed implant surfaces with significant changes in morphologies, roughness, wettability, surface energy, chemical composition, and chemical groups density or deposited molecules. These changes promoted better protein adsorption, osteoblast adhesion, and changes in the mechanisms involved in osseointegration. Thus, the time to put the implant in function has been reduced and the success rates have increased. In the osseointegration process, at the nanoscale, there is no contact between the bone and the implant surface, but there is the formation of a protein anchorage between the periosteum and the implant with an interface formed by proteins. In all the reactions between the body and the implant surface, the activities of fibronectin and integrin are essential, since they are responsible for transmitting information to the cell for its differentiation, adhesion and mobility. Conclusion thus, the analyses of protein-implant interactions are indispensable for a better understanding of the performance of osseointegrated dental implants.

RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da fumaça do cigarro (FC) nas propriedades físicas e mecânicas de braquetes cerâmicos, de policarbonato e de cerâmica de alumina. A hipótese nula testada foi de que os braquetes estéticos não seriam influenciados pela FC. Métodos: Noventa braquetes estéticos foram alocados em três grupos (n = 30): cerâmica (GCE), policarbonato (GCO) e cerâmica de alumina (GPS). Dez amostras de cada grupo foram designadas para análise de cor e rugosidade superficial, realizada antes (T0) e após (T1) exposição à FC, e vinte amostras foram alocadas nos grupos controle e experimental (n = 10) (não expostos e expostos à FC, respectivamente) para o teste de resistência ao cisalhamento (RC). A exposição à FC foi realizada de acordo com o método descrito por Le Mesurier. Leitura colorimétrica, morfologia e rugosidade de superfície, RC e índice de adesivo remanescente (ARI) foram avaliados. A análise estatística foi realizada por meio dos testes t independente e para amostras pareadas, ANOVA/Tukey e teste exato de Fisher (α = 0,05). Resultados: Foram observadas alterações na cor (NBS: GCE = 2,4; GCO = 1,9; GPS = 2,1), rugosidade superficial (ΔRa: GCE = 1,1 ± 0,8 µm; GCO = 1,9 ± 1,5 µm; GPS = -0,3 ± 0,1 µm / ΔRz: GCE = 1,4 ± 1,0 nm; GPS = -0,5 ± 0,1 nm) e RC (GPS - experimental = 221,8 ± 48,6 N) dos braquetes após exposição à FC (p< 0,05). Conclusões: A exposição in vitro de braquetes estéticos à FC resultou em mudanças na cor, para tons mais escuros e mais opacos; alterações na rugosidade superficial e maiores valores de RC. Os resultados do ARI não foram associados à exposição à FC.

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke (CS) on physical and mechanical properties of ceramic, polycarbonate and alumina ceramic brackets. The null hypothesis tested was that aesthetic brackets would not be influenced by CS. Methods: Ninety aesthetic brackets were allocated to three groups (n = 30): ceramic (GCE), polycarbonate (GCO) and alumina ceramic (GPS). Ten samples of each group were assigned to color and surface roughness analysis, performed before (T0) and after (T1) exposure to CS; and twenty samples were allocated into control and experimental groups (n = 10) (not exposed and exposed to CS, respectively) for shear bond strength test (SBS). Exposure to CS followed an adaptation of the method described by Le Mesurier. Colorimetric reading, surface morphology and roughness, SBS and adhesive remnant index (ARI) were assessed. Statistical analysis comprised independent and paired t-tests, ANOVA/Tukey and Fisher’s exact tests (α = 0.05). Results: Changes were observed in brackets’ color (NBS: GCE = 2.4; GCO = 1.9; GPS = 2.1), surface roughness (ΔRa: GCE = 1.1 ± 0.8 µm; GCO = 1.9 ± 1.5µm; GPS = -0.3 ± 0.1 µm / ΔRz: GCE = 1.4 ± 1.0 nm; GPS = -0.5 ± 0.1 nm); and SBS (GPS - experimental = 221.8 ± 48.6 N) after exposure to CS (p< 0.05). Conclusions: Exposure, in vitro, of aesthetic brackets to CS resulted in changes of color to darker and more opaque shades, surface roughness alterations, and higher SBS values. ARI scores were not associated with exposure to CS.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a influência da ancoragem mono e bicortical e do diâmetro dos mini-implantes (MIs) na estabilidade primária desses dispositivos. Métodos: 60 MIs autoperfurantes foram distribuídos em seis grupos, de acordo com o diâmetro (1,5 mm, 1,8 mm ou 2,0 mm) e tipo de ancoragem (monocortical e bicortical), e inseridos em costela bovina. A estabilidade primária foi avaliada pelos testes de torque de inserção, micromobilidade e resistência à tração. ANOVA e/ou análise de Tukey foram usadas para realizar comparações intergrupos (p< 0,05). Estatística não paramétrica (Kruskal-Wallis e Mann-Whitney) foi realizada quando a normalidade não foi encontrada (p< 0,05). Resultados: MIs com diâmetros maiores e ancorados bicorticalmente apresentaram maior estabilidade primária em relação ao torque de inserção (p< 0,05) e micromobilidade (p< 0,05). Apenas o diâmetro do MI influenciou os resultados do teste de resistência à tração. MIs de maior diâmetro apresentaram melhor retenção nos testes de resistência à tração (p< 0,001), independentemente da ancoragem mono ou bicortical. Conclusões: a estabilidade primária do MI é dependente de seu diâmetro e tipo de ancoragem. A ancoragem bicortical apresentou maior estabilidade quando comparada à ancoragem monocortical, independentemente das demais variáveis.

ABSTRACT Objective: Assess the influence of mono- and bicortical anchorage and diameter of mini-implants (MIs) on the primary stability of these devices. Methods: 60 self-drilling MIs were distributed in six groups according to diameter (1.5mm, 1.8mm or 2.0mm) and type of anchorage (monocortical and bicortical) in bovine rib. The primary stability was evaluated by insertion torque, micromobility and pull-out strength tests. ANOVA and/or Tukey analysis were used to conduct intergroup comparisons (p< 0.05). Non-parametric statistics (Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney) were performed when normality was not found (p< 0.05). Results: MIs with larger diameters and bicortical anchorage showed greater primary stability regarding insertion torque (p< 0.05) and micromobility (p< 0.05). Only MI diameter had an effect on the pull-out strength test. Larger diameter MIs presented better retention in pull-out strength tests (p< 0.001), regardless of mono- or bicortical anchorage. Conclusions: MI primary stability is dependent on its diameter and type of anchorage. Bicortical anchorage showed greater stability when compared with monocortical anchorage, independently of other variables.

Abstract The aim of this work was to analyze the properties and shear bond strength (SBS) of lithium disilicate to resin cement before and after etching the glass-ceramic surfaces. Lithium-metasilicate samples were heat treated and characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and roughness measurement. For the analysis of the shear bonding strength (SBS) of lithium disilicate to dental resin cement, three groups (n = 12) of Li2Si2O5 were prepared: 1°)without treatment (NT); 2°)surface etching with hydrofluoric acid(HF), followed by silane agent and adhesive treatment; 3°) surface treatment with a self-etching ceramic primer (SECP). After the heat-treatment, the samples had Li2Si2O5 crystalline phase dispersed in a residual amorphous phase. Roughness of the NT and SECP samples was smaller that of the HF samples. Samples without surface treatment (NT) had the lowest SBS (5.5MPa). HF(24.2MPa) and SECP(24.8MPa) samples has similar SBS. Weibull statistics showed that HF-samples are more reliable than NT and SECP. The SBS was significantly increased by either HF etching and SECP surface treatment. While the chemical characteristics of the surface submitted to SECP treatment are considered to be responsible for the SBS increase, the main adhesion mechanism after HF etching is the increase in surface roughness.

Abstract Bacterial colonization plays a key role on the pathogenesis of peri-implantitis and may be influenced by titanium surface topography. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of titanium topography after fluoride ions deposition in the bacterial colonization. Machined (M), double acid-etched (DE) and double acid-etched surface with fluoride ions deposition (Nano F-) were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, contact angle and roughness (Ra). Streptococcus mutans viability was quantified by Live/Dead Baclight bacterial viability kit. The mean Ra/contact angle values were 0.20 μm/69.13°, 0.53 μm /92.82° and 0.56 μm/94.33° for M, DE and Nano F-, respectively. M surface presented significantly lower live bacterial counts when compared to the Nano F- surface (p=0.007). The dead bacteria count was higher on the Nano F- surface (p=0.001) than on the M and DE surfaces. Crystalline deposition of fluoride ions (Nano F-) promoted an increase in dead bacteria on the tested titanium surface.

RESUMO Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar e comparar o efeito do tratamento térmico realizado em diferentes temperaturas sobre a cor e a flexibilidade dos instrumentos endodà´nticos de níquel-titânio. Métodos Trinta e seis instrumentos endodônticos de níquel-titânio tipo K foram divididos em seis grupos e submetidos ao tratamento térmico com temperaturas variando entre 450ºC e 750ºC. A cor dos instrumentos após tratamento foi visualmente observada. Testes de flexão em 45º foram realizados para medir a flexibilidade dos instrumentos. Os dados foram avaliados estatisticamente através de anà¡lise de vâriancia (ANOVA) com teste post hoc de Tukey. Resultados Observou-se que os instrumentos apresentaram cor mais escura à medida que a temperatura de aquecimento foi aumentada. A flexibilidade é significativamente maior em instrumentos submetidos ao tratamento térmico (P < 0,05). Os instrumentos tratados a 650ºC e 750ºC tiveram maior flexibilidade do que aqueles tratados em baixas temperaturas (450ºC, 500ºC e 550ºC) (P < 0,05). Conclusào O tratamento térmico afeta significativamente a cor apresentada pela superfície dos instrumentos endodà´nticos de níquel-titânio e sua flexibilidade. A maior flexibilidade foi observada em instrumentos tratados nas temperaturas de 650ºC e 750ºC.

ABSTRACT Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effect of heat treatment at different temperatures on the color and flexibility of nickel-titanium endodontic instruments. Methods Thirty-six nickel-titanium K-file endodontic instruments were divided into six groups and submitted to heat treatment at several temperatures between 450ºC and 750ºC. The color was visually observed. Cantilever-bending tests were performed to measure the flexibility of the instruments. The data were statistically evaluated by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc comparisons. Results It was observed that the color becomes darker as the heating temperature increases. The flexibility is significantly higher after the heat treatment (P < 0.05). Instruments treated at 650ºC and 750ºC had higher flexibility than those treated at lower temperatures (450ºC, 500ºC and 550ºC) (P < 0.05). Conclusion Heat treatment has a significant effect on the surface color and flexibility of nickel-titanium endodontic instruments. The highest flexibility was observed in instruments heated at 650ºC and 750ºC.

RESUMO O titânio comercialmente puro (Ti cp) é o principal material usado na fabricação dos implantes dentários osseointegráveis. Para melhorar os índices de sucesso do tratamento odontológico e reduzir o tempo de osseointegração dos implantes, foram desenvolvidas várias metodologias de tratamento da superfície dos implantes. Para caracterizar as morfologias das superfícies dos implantes são usadas as análises no microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), rugosidade, molhabilidade, identificação de possíveis contaminantes, ensaios in-vitro de culturas de células e in-vivo com animais. Entre as técnicas citadas, as mais usadas são as análises no MEV, as medidas dos parâmetros da rugosidade e da molhabilidade. Alguns trabalhos disponíveis na literatura sugerem a caracterização somente do valor de Ra sem apresentar uma explicação para a escolha deste parâmetro. No presente trabalho é feita a proposta de um modelo matemático para quantificar a relação entre os vários parâmetros da rugosidade 3D (Ra, Rq, Rz, Rms, Pico, Vale, PV, R3z e Smax) com a molhabilidade e a energia de superfície do Ti cp com dois tamanhos de grão (micrométricos e sub-micrométricos) e submetidos ao tratamento com ácido. Os resultados mostraram que para o nível de confiança de 95%, as propriedades das superfícies do Ti cp tratados com ácido são mais influenciadas pelos parâmetros de rugosidade Ra e Rms.

ABSTRACT Commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) is the main material used in the manufacture of dental implants. To improve the success rate of dental implant treatment some dental implant surface treatment methodologies have been developed. To characterize the surfaces of dental implants are used scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, roughness and wettability measurements, in-vitro cell culture and in-vivo animal experiments. Among the techniques cited, the simplest are SEM analyzes, of roughness and wettability measurements. Some papers available in the literature show values of surface roughness parameters and suggest the use of the Ra value without presenting any explanation for the choice of this parameter. In the present work, a mathematical model is proposed to quantify the relationship between some parameters of the 3D roughness (Ra, Rq, Rz, Rms, Peak, Vale, PV, R3z and Smax) with the wettability and surface energy of cp Ti with two grain sizes (micrometric and sub-micrometric). The results showed that the properties of the acid treated cp Ti surfaces are more influenced by the roughness parameters Ra and Rms.

Abstract Objective The present study aimed to investigate the participation of focal adhesion kinases (FAK) in interactions between osteoblastic cells and titanium (Ti) surfaces with three different topographies, namely, untreated (US), microstructured (MS), and nanostructured (NS). Methodology Osteoblasts harvested from the calvarial bones of 3-day-old rats were cultured on US, MS and NS discs in the presence of PF-573228 (FAK inhibitor) to evaluate osteoblastic differentiation. After 24 h, we evaluated osteoblast morphology and vinculin expression, and on day 10, the following parameters: gene expression of osteoblastic markers and integrin signaling components, FAK protein expression and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. A smooth surface, porosities at the microscale level, and nanocavities were observed in US, MS, and NS, respectively. Results FAK inhibition decreased the number of filopodia in cells grown on US and MS compared with that in NS. FAK inhibition decreased the gene expression of Alp, bone sialoprotein, osteocalcin, and ALP activity in cells grown on all evaluated surfaces. FAK inhibition did not affect the gene expression of Fak, integrin alpha 1 ( Itga1 ) and integrin beta 1 ( Itgb1 ) in cells grown on MS, increased the gene expression of Fak in cells grown on NS, and increased the gene expression of Itga1 and Itgb1 in cells grown on US and NS. Moreover, FAK protein expression decreased in cells cultured on US but increased in cells cultured on MS and NS after FAK inhibition; no difference in the expression of vinculin was observed among cells grown on all surfaces. Conclusions Our data demonstrate the relevance of FAK in the interactions between osteoblastic cells and Ti surfaces regardless of surface topography. Nanotopography positively regulated FAK expression and integrin signaling pathway components during osteoblast differentiation. In this context, the development of Ti surfaces with the ability to upregulate FAK activity could positively impact the process of implant osseointegration.

The Cr-Co-Mo alloys are commonly used in dentistry for prosthetic components and dental implant supported prosthesis. These alloys present high corrosion resistance owing to a passive oxide film on the surface. However, the oral environment is an aggressive system, due to pH variation, chloride and fluoride ions presence, that can decrease the metal alloy corrosion resistance. Although Cr-Co-Mo alloys have been used for a long time, their electrochemical properties on different pH have not been studied yet. This study aimed to evaluate the electrochemical properties of Cr-Co-Mo alloy in NaCl 0.9% solution in different pH and mouthwash solution. To imitate the oral environment, electrolytes with a pH equal to 2, 3, and 6 were used. Corrosion studies were performed by open circuit potential observation, potentiodynamic polarization curve, chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance. The results showed that the analyzed alloy has good corrosion resistance under experimental conditions, although the acidified NaCl 0.9% solution increased the corrosion current, particularly in cathodic potentials.

Resumo Introdução A contaminação das restaurações de zircônia com saliva antes da cimentação influencia na resistência da adesão face à afinidade com os íons da saliva. Objetivo Analisar os métodos de limpeza da zircônia na adesão à dentina após a contaminação com saliva. Material e método Oitenta amostras de zircônia com dimensão 4×11×3 mm foram cortadas de blocos pré-sinterizados (3Y-TZP, In-Ceram - VITA) e sinterizadas. Após a sinterização, as amostras foram jateadas com partículas de óxido de alumínio, lavadas em água destilada e divididas em dois grupos com base no tipo de cimento de adesão: RelyX U200 Clicker® (grupo R) ou Multilink N® (grupo M). As amostras foram divididas em quatro subgrupos (n=10) de acordo com os métodos de limpeza e com o tipo de cimento: RG1 e MGI (sem contaminação com saliva); RG2 e MG2 (sem contaminação e limpeza com Ivoclean®); RG3 e MG3 (com contaminação e limpeza com água); RG4 e MG4 (com contaminação e limpeza com Ivoclean®). Após a cimentação, as amostras foram armazenadas em água por 10 dias. A resistência da adesão foi determinada pelo teste de cisalhamento. Resultado Os resultados mostraram que a maior e a menor resistência foram do Grupo RG2 e MG2, respectivamente. Entre as amostras cimentadas com RelyXTM, somente o grupo RG4 apresentou diferença na resistência da adesão (p=0,018) em relação aos demais subgrupos. Entre os grupos cimentados com Multilink N®, não houve diferença estatística (p>0,05) na resistência. Conclusão Os resultados mostraram que o agente de limpeza Ivoclean® não foi efetivo na descontaminação e não influenciou na resistência ao cisalhamento.

Abstract Introduction An important clinical factor related to the adhesion of ceramic restorations is the contamination with saliva before cementation. The zirconia has strong affinity with the ions present in the saliva which can interfere in the cementation adhesion. Objective to evaluate the influence of the zirconia cleaning methods on the dentin adhesion system after contamination with saliva. Material and method Eight zirconia samples (4x11x3 mm) were cut from pre-sintered (3Y-TZP, In-Ceram-VITA®) zirconia blocks, sintered and sandblasted with alumina particles. After sintering the samples were washed in distilled water on the ultrasound and randomly divided into two groups based on the type of adhesion cement RelyX U200 Clicker® (group R) or Multilink N® (group M). Before cementation the samples were divided into four subgroups (n = 10) according to the cleaning and cementation methods: RG1 and MGI (without contamination with saliva); RG2 and MG2 (without contamination and cleaning with Ivoclean®); RG3 and MG3 (with contamination and cleaning with H2O); RG4 and MG4 (with contamination and cleaning with Ivoclean®). After cementation, the samples were stored in water (37 °C for 10 days). The adhesion strength was determined by the shear strength test. Result The results showed that the highest and lowest resistance were from the RG2 and MG2 subgroups, respectively. Among the samples cemented with RelyX® only the RG4 subgroup presented a difference in adhesion resistance (p = 0.018) in relation to the other subgroups. Among the subgroups cemented with Multilink N®, there was no statistical difference (p> 0.05) in shear strength. Conclusion Based on the results it was possible to conclude that the commercial cleaning agent Ivoclean® was not effective in the decontamination and did not influence the shear strength.

RESUMO Objetivo: Este estudo comparou a vida em fadiga de instrumentos endodônticos fabricados com a liga de NiTi convencional com eletropolimento de superfície, RaCe (FKG Dentaire, LaChauxdeFonds, Suiça), com instrumentos fabricados com a liga de NiTi CM Wire, submetidos a tratamento termomecânico, no processo de fabricação, HyFlex CM (Coltene Whaledent, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, EUA), ambos com geometria e dimensões semelhantes, visando determinar a influência do processo de fabricação das ligas e do acabamento superficial na resistência à fadiga. Métodos: Foram utilizados vinte instrumentos HyFlex CM e RaCe com D0 0,25mm, conicidade 0,06mm/mm, 25mm de comprimento, ambos com seção transversal triangular. A resistência à fratura foi avaliada através de teste estático de fadiga ciclica, utilizando um canal artificial em aço-inoxidável com 5mm de raio (86°), sendo registrado o tempo e calculado o número de ciclos para ocorrer a fratura (NCF). Para análise estatística empregou-se o teste t de Student. As superfícies de fratura dos instrumentos foram analisadas em MEV. Resultados: O NCF foi significativamente maior para os instrumentos HyFlex CM em comparação com as limas RaCe (p˂0,05), sendo 1336% mais resistentes à fadiga. A análise das superfícies fraturadas em MEV revelou características morfológicas do tipo dúctil para ambos os instrumentos e ausência de deformação plástica. Conclusão: Os instrumentos HyFlex CM apresentaram valores mais elevados de NCF. Deste modo, pode-se concluir que o tratamento térmico a qual estes instrumentos com a liga CM Wire foram submetidos os torna mais resistentes à fratura do que os instrumentos Race, fabricados com a liga de NiTi convencional com eletropolimento.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study compared the fatigue behavior of endodontic instruments manufactured with conventional NiTi alloy electropolishing, RaCe (FKG Dentaire, LaChauxdeFonds, Switzerland), with instruments manufactured with NiTi CM Wire subjected to thermomechanical treatment, in the manufacturing process, HyFlex CM (Coltène Whaledent, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, USA), both with similar geometry and dimensions in order to determine the influence of the manufacturing process in the fatigue resistance. Methods: The methodoly consisted of twenty HyFlex CM and RaCe instruments with D0 0.25 mm, taper 0.06 mm / mm, 25 mm length, both with triangular cross section. The fracture resistance was evaluated by static fatigue test, using a stainless artificial canal with 5mm of radius (86°), recording the time and calculating the number of cycles until fracture occurs (NCF). For statistical analysis the Student t test was used The fractured instruments surface was analyzed by SEM. Results: The NCF was significantly higher for HyFlex CM instruments in comparison with RaCe files (P˂0.05) being 1336% more resistant to fatigue. The analysis of the fractured surface by SEM showed ductile-kind morphological characteristics for both instruments and the absence of plastic deformation. Conclusion: HyFlex CM instruments present higher values of NCF. Thus, it can be concluded that the thermal treatment to which these instruments with CM Wire alloy are submitted makes them more resistant to fracture than Race instruments manufactured with conventional NiTi alloy electropolishing.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a fadiga cíclica de dois instrumentos finalizadores anatômicos: XP-Endo Finisher e XP-Clean. O padrão de rugosidade e a micro dureza dos instrumentos também foram avaliados. Os instrumentos foram submetidos à resistência à fadiga cíclica, medindo o tempo de fratura em um canal artificial de aço inoxidável com um ângulo de 60 ° e um raio de curvatura de 5 mm. A superfície de fratura de todos os fragmentos foi examinada com um microscópio eletrônico de varredura. A rugosidade dos instrumentos foi quantificada usando um perfilômetro e o teste de micro dureza foi realizado usando um testador de dureza Vickers. Os resultados foram analisados estatisticamente usando o teste t de student em um nível de significância de p<0,05. A análise Weibull também foi realizada. XP-Endo Finisher apresentou vida de fadiga cíclica significativamente mais longa do que os instrumentos XP-Clean (p<0,05). XP-Endo Finisher foi capaz de suportar 1000% mais ciclos para fratura quando comparado aos instrumentos XP-Clean. A inspeção visual em microscópio eletrônico de varredura das superfícies de fratura revelou características fractográficas da fratura dúctil em todos os instrumentos testados. Não foi observada deformação plástica no eixo helicoidal dos instrumentos fraturados. Quando o tempo para a fratura foi comparado entre os instrumentos, o XP-Endo Finisher durou mais do que o XP-Clean com uma probabilidade de 99,9%. Os instrumentos XP-Endo Finisher também exibiram uma rugosidade significativamente menor do que os instrumentos XP-Clean (p<0,05). Não foram observadas diferenças na micro dureza entre os arquivos (p>0,05). Pode-se concluir que os instrumentos XP-Endo Finisher apresentaram desempenho melhorado em comparação com os instrumentos XP-Clean, demonstrando maior resistência à fadiga cíclica e menor rugosidade.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cyclic fatigue of two anatomic finishing files: XP-Endo Finisher and XP-Clean. Roughness pattern and the micro-hardness of the files were also assessed. Instruments were subjected to cyclic fatigue resistance measuring the time to fracture in an artificial stainless-steel canal with a 60° angle and a 5-mm radius of curvature. The fracture surface of all fragments was examined with a scanning electron microscope. The roughness of the working parts was quantified by using a profilometer and the micro-hardness test was carried out using a Vickers hardness tester. Results were statistically analyzed using a student´s t-test at a significance level of P < 0.05. Weibull analysis was also performed. XP-Endo Finisher presented significantly longer cyclic fatigue life than XP-Clean instruments (P<0.05). XP-Endo Finisher was able to withstand 1000% more cycles to fracture when compared to XP-Clean instruments. SEM visual inspection of the fracture surfaces revealed fractographic characteristics of ductile fracture in all tested instruments; wide-ranging forms of dimples were identified and no plastic deformation in the helical shaft of the fractured instruments was observed. When mean life was compared XP-Endo Finisher lasted longer than XP-Clean with a probability of 99.9%. XP-Endo Finisher instruments also exhibited significantly lower roughness than XP-Clean instruments (P<0.05). No differences in the micro-hardness was observed between the files (P>0.05). It can be concluded that XP-Endo Finisher instruments showed improved performance when compared with XP-Clean instruments, demonstrating higher cyclic fatigue resistance and lower roughness.

RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o desenho e as medidas de cinco marcas diferentes de mini-implantes ortodônticos, e sua influência na resistência à fratura em torção. Métodos: cinquenta mini-implantes foram divididos em cinco grupos, correspondentes a diferentes fabricantes (DEN, Dentaurum; RMO, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics; CON, Conexão; NEO, Neodent; SIN, Sistema de Implantes Nacional). Vinte e cinco mini-implantes foram submetidos ao teste de fratura por torção no pescoço e na ponta, com mandris fixados a uma máquina universal de testes mecânicos. Os outros 25 mini-implantes foram submetidos ao teste de torque de inserção em blocos de costelas suínas, utilizando-se um torquímetro e um contra-ângulo montado em motor cirúrgico. O formato da ponta ativa dos mini-implantes foi avaliado por microscopia. O teste não-paramétrico de Friedman e o teste F de Snedecor na análise de variância (ANOVA) foram utilizados para avaliar as diferenças entre os grupos. Resultados: o torque de fratura do pescoço variou de 23,45 N.cm (DEN) a 34,82 N.cm (SIN); e o da ponta, entre 9,35 N.cm (CON) e 24,36 N.cm (NEO). O valor do torque de inserção variou de 6,6 N.cm (RMO) a 10,2 N.cm (NEO). As características que mais influenciaram os resultados foram: diâmetro externo, diâmetro interno, razão entre o diâmetro interno e o externo, e a presença de fresagem na região apical do mini-implante. Conclusões: os torques de fratura foram diferentes entre os cinco tipos avaliados, tanto no pescoço quanto na ponta. Os mini-implantes NEO e SIN foram os mais resistentes à fratura do pescoço e da ponta. Os torques de fratura tanto na ponta quanto no pescoço foram maiores do que o torque necessário para a inserção dos mini-implantes.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed at evaluating the design and dimensions of five different brands of orthodontic mini-implants, as well as their influence on torsional fracture strength. Methods: Fifty mini-implants were divided into five groups corresponding to different manufactures (DEN, RMO, CON, NEO, SIN). Twenty-five mini-implants were subjected to fracture test by torsion in the neck and the tip, through arbors attached to a Universal Mechanical Testing Machine. The other 25 mini-implants were subjected to insertion torque test into blocks of pork ribs using a torquimeter and contra-angle handpiece mounted in a surgical motor. The shape of the active tip of the mini-implants was evaluated under microscopy. The non-parametric Friedman test and Snedecor’s F in analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to evaluate the differences between groups. Results: The fracture torque of the neck ranged from 23.45 N.cm (DEN) to 34.82 N.cm (SIN), and of the tip ranged from 9.35 N.cm (CON) to 24.36 N.cm (NEO). Insertion torque values ranged from 6.6 N.cm (RMO) to 10.2 N.cm (NEO). The characteristics that most influenced the results were outer diameter, inner diameter, the ratio between internal and external diameters, and the existence of milling in the apical region of the mini-implant. Conclusions: The fracture torques were different for both the neck and the tip of the five types evaluated. NEO and SIN mini-implants showed the highest resistance to fracture of the neck and tip. The fracture torques of both tip and neck were higher than the torque required to insert mini-implants.

RESUMO O óxido de zircônio (ZrO2) policristalino parcialmente estabilizado com 3%mol de óxido de ítrio (Y2O3), ou 3Y-TZP, é usado como biomaterial nas restaurações protéticas odontológicas. Esta indicação possui limitação devido à coloração branca e alta opacidade da zircônia. Para melhorar a estética sem comprometer o desempenho funcional são adicionados outros óxidos à zircônia. Esta adição modifica a coloração da zircônia para tonalidades próximas a dos dentes naturais. Este trabalho avaliou o efeito da adição do Fe2O3 na microestrutura, nas propriedades mecânicas e nas propriedades ópticas da 3Y-TZP. Foram preparados cinco grupos de amostras com diferentes percentuais de Fe2O3. A caracterização química dos grupos foi realizada por fluorescência de raios-X (FRX). As propriedades mecânicas foram determinadas em ensaios de dureza e de resistência a flexão em quatro pontos. A análise quantitativa de transformação de fases foi realizada pelo método de Rietveld dos dados dos ensaios de difração de raios-X (DRX). O MEV foi usado para caracterizar a morfologia da superfície antes e após o ensaio de flexão. Os resultados mostraram que a adição do Fe2O3 influencia na transformação de fase, aumenta a dureza e a resistência à fratura por flexão quando sua concentração se encontra entre 0,02% e 0,17% do peso total. Acima dessa faixa de concentração, as amostras apresentaram perdas no desempenho mecânico. A adição de Fe2O3 não induziu mudanças significativas na densidade e no tamanho médio de grão.

ABSTRACT The zirconium oxide (ZrO2) polycristaline partially stabilized by yttrium oxide (Y2O3) at 3mol%, 3Y-TZP, has its use been increased as a biomaterial. However, as dental prosthetics, its indication is still limited because of its white color and high opacity. Seeking improvements regarding aesthetics without compromising its functional performance, oxides such as iron oxide (Fe2O3) has been added to the microstructure of zirconia in order to provide a yellow-brownish color similar to natural teeth. This study evaluated the effect of adding Fe2O3 on the microstructure and mechanical and optical properties of 3Y-TZP. Five groups were investigated containing different concentrations of Fe2O3. Firstly, a chemical characterization of each group was carried out through X-ray fluorescence test (XRF). Microstructural characterization was performed by density and average grain size measurements. Mechanical properties were evaluated by performing hardness and four points flexural strength tests. Quantitative analysis of phase transformation was done using the Rietveld method, for each group submitted to the test of X-ray diffraction (XRD). Fractography by SEM analysis were also made on the fracture surface of the samples from tensile test. The results showed that the Fe2O3 addition influenced the phase transformation process, and proportionally increased the samples hardness and flexural strength when their concentrations varied from 0.02% to 0.17% of the total weight. Above this range, the samples showed losses in their mechanical performance. The Fe2O3 additions showed no significant changes in the density and average grain size of 3Y-TZP.
